Calving Season: What to Record and Why It Pays

Record the birth the day it happens

Five facts, thirty seconds at the kraal:

1. The dam — pick her by tag or by photo.
2. The date — today, if you record it today. This one field drives the calf’s whole life: weaning window, BAITS tagging window, age at sale.
3. Sex of the calf.
4. A photo with the dam — proof of parentage you’ll be glad of later.
5. Ease of calving — pulled or unassisted; you’re building the case for which cows stay.

The calf inherits its dam’s owner and breed automatically, and the owner gets a phone alert the moment it’s recorded.

What the records buy you

• A true calving rate — calves born per cow put to the bull. It’s the single best measure of whether your breeding herd is paying, and you can’t compute it from memory.
• Cull decisions with evidence. A cow with no calf for two seasons, on record, is a decision — not an argument.
• Weaning done on time. The app raises the weaning work when the cohort reaches age, because every birth date is real.

Watch the interval

A cow should calve roughly every 12–13 months. The app flags cows whose interval stretches past your threshold — those are the ones eating profit.
